Grafted Rods: A Tilting Phase Transition
نویسنده
چکیده
A tilting phase transition is predicted for systems comprising rod like molecules which are irreversibly grafted to a flat surface, so that the non interacting rods are perpendicularly oriented. The transition is controlled by the grafting density ρ. It occurs as ρ increases as a result of the interplay between two energies. Tilt is favoured by the van-der-Waals attraction between the rods. It is opposed by the bending elasticity of the grafting functionality. The role of temperature is discussed, and the tilting mechanism is compared to other tilting transitions reported in the literature. PACS-Numbers: 64.70, 68.35, 82.65

A lattice of uniformly charged, infinitesimally thin rods decorated with an ordered array of counterions exhibits anomalous behavior as the spacing between the rods is varied. In particular, the counterion lattice undergoes a sequence of structural shearing or "tilting," phase transformations as the spacing between the rods decreases. The potential implications of this behavior with respect to ...
متن کاملFrom soft to hard rod behavior in liquid crystalline suspensions of sterically stabilized colloidal filamentous particles.
The liquid crystalline phase behavior of a colloidal system of sterically stabilized rods is reported. Our colloidal suspensions consist of highly monodisperse, semi-flexible filamentous viruses which have been coated with neutral hydrophilic polymers by irreversibly binding poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to the surface of the virus particles. Depending on the size of the grafted polymer, up to th...
متن کاملSmectic ordering in athermal systems of rodlike triblock copolymers.
The phase behavior of the system of parallel rigid triblock copolymers is examined using the second virial density functional theory. The triblock particle consists of two identical infinitely thin hard rods of finite lengths on the opposite ends of one central hard cylinder with nonzero length and diameter. Stability analyses and free energy calculations show that the system of parallel partic...
متن کاملSmectic Phase in a Colloidal Suspension of Semiflexible Virus Particles
Aqueous suspensions of micron-length, charged, semiflexible fd virus particles are studied experimentally in order to explore properties of the cholesteric-smectic phase transition in a system approximating flexible, hard rods. Through comparison of this system with (1) computer simulations of hard, rigid rods, (2) experiments on tobacco mosaic virus, a rigid, charged virus, and on pf1, a flexi...
